Locks & Lights Campaign

Fundraising goal; 300 Euros
Deadline: April 15, 2013
1.  The Goal
To raise enough money to outfit all our bikes with lights and locks to increase the safety for all our participants and to maintain the security of the bikes.

2.  The Mission / Our Message
We would like to ensure that all Berlin laws are being followed by providing our participants with functional lights for each one of our bikes.  We feel that safety comes first and want to encourage our riders to be the safest in the city.  We have also have a problem with cheap locks being broken off our bike so our goal is to replace our current locks with higher quality ones.  Our donated bikes are special to us and we want to do what we can to protect them from theft, and so no rider is left stranded.

3.  The Timeline
We would love to reach our goal by April 15, 2013 in order to ensure we have enough time to install all of the lights before the spring season begins.  We expect our participants in the spring will be at least double last years numbers, and we want to be well prepared for our parking lots to be empty, and our bikes to be circling the streets of Berlin.

Upcoming BVG and Polizei bicycle auctions - a great way to get your own bike.

Some of you may not have been in Berlin long enough to hear about the bicycle auctions that happen on behalf of Polizei and BVG every two months. Those bikes that are not claimed by their owners after an allotted time are sold off to the highest bidder at these auctions.

Having attended many of these auctions, I recommend the Polizei auctions as they are more organised and have a larger number of bikes on offer.
The benefits of buying a bike in this manner are:
cheap bikes - cheaper than flohmarktsproof of receipt - means you can sell off bike later more easilynot supporting bicycle theftit's an exciting atmosphere and gives you a buzz when you're the highest bidder  It is best if you go there with someone who knows what to look out for in buying a second hand bike, as they are of varying quality and a little bit about how numbers sound in German is a plus.

If you contact us at BSB, we may be attending and be able to help you out in choosing a suitable ride.

The next BVG …
